Each Ludwig Boltzmann Institute founded since the organisational reform is supported by unpaid scientific advisory boards. The advisory board comprises five recognised experts in the discipline researched by the respective Institutes and supports the Institute in maintaining its scientific work at an internationally competitive level throughout its lifetime. The advisory board thus comprise many international members. The scientific advisory board of a Ludwig Boltzmann Institute fulfils an advisory function and is intended to provide support particularly in relation to the quality and relevance of the research programme and the academic development possibilities of the employees. Specifically, the advisory board has the following tasks:

• To advise the LBG and the Institute Management on long-term planning of research and development activities
• To provide regular opinions on the technical and scientific performance of the Institute
• To promote cooperation of the Institute with other research establishments
• To provide expert support in decision-making on request.
