LBI for Neo-Latin Studies

Despite its enormous extent and significance, Neo-Latin literature, i.e. the Latin literature from the Renaissance to the present day, is little studied and poorly represented in academic institutions. The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies intends to counteract this shortcoming by its exclusive dedication to Neo-Latin literature (with a focus on the 16th to 18th century) and by a fresh approach:
Traditional studies have tended to look at Neo-Latin from the perspective of other disciplines – such as classics, history, or the modern languages –, which has cemented a misconception of the inferior nature and backward orientation of Neo-Latin literature. The LBI, by contrast, will set Neo-Latin literature in the context of its time and develop a model by which it can be understood as a dynamic element of early modern culture, which has made a significant contribution to the emergence of Europe as we know it today.
Partner of the Institute are the University Freiburg, the Pontificio Comitato di Scienze Storiche at the Vatikan und the Austrian National Library.
LBI for Lung Vascular Research

The LBI for Lung Vascular Research brings together excellent researchers and business partners in the dynamic field of lung vascular remodelling and reverse-remodelling therapy into a single, multi disciplinary and highly competitive institute at the Medical University of Graz. The clinical background is set by a well described group of devastating diseases, the different forms of pulmonary hypertension.
Epidemiological data are not available for the entire field of pulmonary hypertension, however, approximately 15 % of all patients suffering from the most common causes of death, severe heart failure and chronic obstructive lung disease develop pulmonary hypertension which has a major impact on survival. The LBI will favourably combine experimental know-how, innovative imaging techniques and clinical background for high-yield research in an integrated approach. This assembly in one place is unique, worldwide.
The LBI for Lung Vascular Research is supported by four partners - Bayer Austria, Nebu-Tec Company, Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Medical University of Graz.

Foundation:
The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Age Research was founded in 1972 by Prof. DDr. Karl Fellinger. In 1988, Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Tragl took over the administrative management and in 1991 he became Manager of the Institute. Under his management, working groups were set up to deal with significant questions and particularly renowned specialist medical scientists were found to coordinate them. Research topics of these working groups were and still remain central issues of age-related medicine such as metabolism, osteopathy and dementia research.
Since 2002, Prof. Dr. Peter Pietschmann has supported the Institute’s Management as Administrative Manager.
Since January 2008 the work group "Innovative Imaging Diagnostic" with Prof. Dr. W. Hruby is a part of the Ludwig Boltzmann Instiute for Age Research.
Objects and contents:
The objects of the Institute for Age Research are to investigate ageing processes and their connection with the onset of diseases and to examine age-adapted possibilities for treatment of diseases that are characteristic of older people. Current studies are dedicated to age-related changes in the brain (dementia diseases), the bones (osteoporosis) and metabolism (hormonal disturbances).
The therapeutic approaches of the studies include the delaying of dementia diseases through cholinesterase inhibitors and the effects of biophosphonates and mineral replacement upon osteoporosis.

- Appreciation Award for Barbara Stelzl-Marx
On March 19 Dr. Barbara Stelzl-Marx, deputy director of the LBI for Research on War Consequences was awarded with the Josef-Krainer-Appreciation Award.
- Historian Stefan Karner received a mention for his pioneering research by the Vatikan
Stefan Karner, director of the LBI for Research on War Consequences was honoured with the Papal Order of Saint Gregory the Great for his pioneering work regarding his research on the ordeals of POW, forced workers and displaced persons.
2011
- KIWIE-Silver Medal for Gabriele Pomper
The researcher of the Ludwig Boltzmann Cluster for Cardiovascular Research received a silver medal from the Korean International Woman‘s Invention Association for her work within the projet "PRIZE". During this project a group of new substances was developed, which are possible candidates for cardiovascular drugs with vasodilating effects.
- Best-Presentation-Prize for Catharina Schreiber
The doctoral candidate of the Ludwig Boltzmann Cluster for Cardiovascular Research won best presentation prize for her presentation called „In-vivo evaluation of electrospun, biodegradable and non-degradable elastomeric vascular grafts“ during the 35th seminar of the Austrian Society of Surgical Research.
2007
- Coop Prize for researches of the LBI for Osteology
A group of researchers involved with the LBI for Osteology under the management of University Professor Dr. Klaus Klaushofer and University Professor Dr. Herwig Peterlik of the University of Vienna were awarded the renowned Copp Prize 2007 of the German Society of Osteology.
- Carl S. Apstein Prize for cardiovascular research
In January 2007, at the Second German, Austrian and Swiss Cardiovascular Research Conference, the “Carl S. Apstein Prize” for research into chronic heart failure was awarded to a team led by Dr. Karola Trescher, further researchers and Cluster Coordinator and University Lecturer Dr. Bruno K. Podesser.
- By-Fellowship for Wilhelm Hemecker at Cambridge University
Dr. Wilhelm Hemecker, Head of the Institute for the History and Theory of Biography, was elected as a By-Fellow of Churchill College of the University of Cambridge and can thus carry out research at this renowned establishment.
- Prize for Brain research in Geriatrics awarded to LBI for Aging Research
University Professor DDr. Peter Fischer and Dr.Mag. Susanne Jungwirth of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Age Research were awarded the prize for “Brain research in Geriatrics”, which was sponsored by the University of Witten (Germany), for their work.
