The 3rd call for proposals by the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft for the establishment of new Ludwig Boltzmann research institutes began in November 2008 and was ended in October 2009.

This call for proposals was characterized by the submission of numerous top-quality proposals and eventually resulted in the decision to found the following three new Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes:

• LBI for for Lung Vascular Research
• LBI for Neo-Latin Studies
• LBI for Archaeological Prospection & Virtual Archaeology
